Well, it would make some sense. The scenario is that I'm connected to a
linux box with the wlan0 interface and then I would like to link to a remote
commercial AP. I read somewhere that there were firmware problems in the
prism2 chip that prevented it to setup WDS with commercial APS, so the linux
box in AP mode never would work

It would make sense, if you for instance would like to build a wireless
hub with WLAN as backbone to ethernet. But still, a WLAN card in
"Managed" mode can't be bridged. An alternative is to use WDS links
(which require a HostAP based AP). Jouni has also implemented a
"Repeter" mode with standard compliant WDS frames that you might be able
to use together with at least some other brands' AP's.
