Good news!
I was using hostap_pci (05-02) on the server, and the kernel's orinoco_cs on the client. This was giving me all of the many errors, huge logfiles, etc. I downloaded the CVS snapshot tonight, and compiled it for both machines (hostap_pci and hostap_cs). It seems to be working like a charm so far! No error messages, 11Mb/s connections. With the 05-19 driver, I had some lockups on the server... I'll let you know if this one seems to have fixed it all up.
