Extended repeater mode

Hostap repeater mode is meant to enable for instance bridging between two WLAN cards. Would it be possible to implement the same function but without the use of wds frames? What I am thinking of is to let the hostap driver in STA mode make multiple associations with a WLAN ap, one for each mac address connected on the other side. Is it possible and if so, is it a lot of work to implement it?
