The most important missing functionality was a method for configuring station information to the kernel driver. In other words, the released version was able to perform minimal authentication and association, but it did not allow any data frames to be transmitted since kernel driver did not know anything about the associated station.
I have now added an ioctl() for flushing the kernel driver station list and adding new associated stations. With these changes, hostapd can be used for a bit more useful experiments, but there are still various features missing when compared to the kernel driver version of management functionality. Things like expiring stations and supporting shared key authentication are not yet implemented in hostapd.
