The exact syslog entries would be useful, otherwise the quality of assistance you receive will be greatly reduced.

You can grab a Windows partition and upgrade as high as 1.4.9 easily enough. (1.4.2 is busted.)

It's possible it was just an oversight. You're jumping to conclusions.
