This is expected behavior.. Changing essid does not disassociate stations and the previously associated stations will continue to operate as far as the AP is concerned. Station code could of course notice the essid change in the beacon frames and try to re-associate or terminate association. If you would like to flush all station data, you would need to issue 'iwpriv wlan0 maccmd 4', i.e., kickall, command after changing essid. This will force the stations to re-associate and the new essid should then be in use.
